Puffin 18 offers a dramatic profile against a solid black background, drawing attention to the bird’s unusual breeding-season features. Long pale-golden feathers sweep backward from the head, while turquoise around the eye and the orange bill introduce concentrated bursts of color. The darkness surrounding the subject accentuates the smooth curves of the face and neck. This photograph has an almost theatrical quality that sets it apart from more naturalistic puffin portraits.
