Royal Tern 5 captures the instant a tern lowers itself toward the beach with wings lifted and tail feathers opened behind it. Dark markings along the wing tips provide definition against the otherwise pale bird and bright sand. Short grasses cut across the foreground, grounding the action within a real nesting or resting area. The compressed landing posture gives the photograph a sense of precision just before the bird touches down.
